There is a fat cat that sees a bee and she is afraid of the bee. This makes her go up a tree which she is also afraid of. A pig comes along and asks her if she is stuck in the tree but does not help her get down. The tree branch that the cat is on bends closer to the ground until it drops a nest and the cat on the ground. Since the nest falls out of the tree the cat decides to pull out a red mat and lay on the eggs until they hatch. Many of her friends come up to her asking her if she would like to do different activities but she does not get up or do anything until the eggs hatch.

I would rate this book three out of four stars. For an early reader the easy words and the rhyming that Cox and Cartwright implement makes reading the words on the pages very easy. The artwork is a little weird and at some points looks unpolished and that is why I give it three stars instead of four. The material of the book is also not the best. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and going on the journey with the cat. Even with the lack of words and simple vocabulary used the authors helped create a connection to the cat and the eggs throughout the book. I would  highly recommend this book for children are just beginning and have a very limited vocabulary.

  1. You have identified the very reason why decodable books are important--to give beginning readers the practice they need reading words that are very similar in format, such as the _at word family in this example--hat, rat, mat, sat, cat. Some are better and more engaging than others. This book appears to have higher quality illustrations than most, which may make it more appealing to new readers.
