A little egg lays on a leaf during the night. On a Sunday morning as the sun was rising the egg pops and a very hungry baby caterpillar comes out. The baby caterpillar begins to look for food and eats through one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, and three plums on Wednesday. The only issue was that the caterpillar was still hungry after eating everything. The caterpillar continues to eat through basically everything and anything that it can get a hold of. After eating too much one night the caterpillar gets a really bad stomachache. The caterpillar finally gets his fill and is no longer hungry or little for that matter. The caterpillar became super fat and surrounds himself with a cocoon that he stayed in for more than two weeks. When the caterpillar pushed his way out he came out a beautiful butterfly.
I would rate this book four our of four stars. The fact that the story is based on something that is scientifically accurate but still fun and interesting. I found the illustrations to be simple but very telling and thought out. I enjoyed how the food in the illustrations had little holes in them like the caterpillar just ate through one little piece of the food. Carle does a great job in pushing the story and narrative even though the amount of words throughout the book are limited.
