If you give a mouse a cookie he is going to ask for a glass of milk. Once you give him the milk he most likely ask for a straw. After he is done with the milk he will ask for a napkin to wipe his face. Just to make sure that he does not have a milk mustache he will ask to look in a mirror. After the mouse looks in the mirror he will probably see that he needs a haircut so this will make him ask for a pair of nail scissors. After cutting his hair he will want to clean up all the hair so he'll ask for a broom to sweep everything up. The mouse might even take it further than his hair and sweep the whole house. When the mouse is finished cleaning he will want to take a nap. The mouse before he takes a nap will ask to be read a story and will ask to see the pictures as the story is being read. When he sees the pictures it is going to make him want to draw himself. Once he is done his drawing he is going to want to sign his name and hang his picture on the refrigerator. Since the picture is on the refrigerator he will want to stand back and admire the picture. While admiring the picture on the refrigerator the mouse will ask for a glass of milk. This will cause him to ask for a cookie to have with his milk.
I rate this book four out of four stars. This was one of the books that my mother would read to me when I was a child. When I think of children's books this is always one of the first ones that pops into my head. I enjoyed this book just as much today as I did when I was a child. Going through each page and seeing all of the crazy somehow linked things that the mouse would ask for is a very fun and interesting thing to do. Numeroff uses the slippery slope fallacy as the premise of the storyline which is great. I enjoyed how everything that happens in the book leads the reader right back to where the book starts. The illustrations and how everything that the mouse asks for or wants is right there on the page. For a young reader I think this book would be a funny short book to read before bed.

Hey Khalid,
ReplyDeleteMy mom and I used to read this together too! I love these books, especially "If You Give A Pig a Pancake". While they are not the most ambitious or nuanced of books, they are sweet and fun and totally teach kids the importance of setting boundaries.
