A little boy is having some trouble fitting in because he has a pet baby elephant. The boy takes his elephant on a walk everyday. The elephant does not like the cracks in the sidewalk so the boy has to carry him over the cracks. The boy attempts to take his elephant to someones house who is having a pet club day. When the boy and his elephant arrive outside, the door has a sign that says "STRICTLY NO ELEPHANTS". The two leave to go home but run into a little girl who had also been rejected from the pet club day too. She had a pet skunk and no one wanted to hang out with her. The boy and the girl decide to start their own club. All of the kids who have unique pets join the club and they put up a sign that says "All are welcome".
I would rate this book three out of four stars. The message that Mantchev is sending is a very positive and good for young children to see. I found it funny that a little boy was walking around town with a elephant on a leash like a dog and another kid had a walrus in a bowl like a fish. The fact that all the children even though they were rejected from the other club decided to welcome anyone into theirs was a very good touch by Mantchev. I just really like the message in the book and even though the story seemed short I thought this book was a great read.
